A little after the ST4 finale, the bylers/hoppers decide to stay in hawkins after they believe Vecna may be coming back. After everything going on, El knows that she loves Mike but they want to take a break from their relationship because even though Mike said he loved El, he felt things were moving too fast. While they are back Will is staying with Mike, as Will is looking around he discovers hellfire, emotion and chaos ensues with Will's feelings of betrayal and Mikes feelings of guilt leading to the relooking of their relationship.

He had pushed him away multiple times because of this denial but now Will and his family is back in Hawkins. Will has been a wreck this past eight months of being back in Hawkins. He couldn't help but feel anxious about the situation at hand. He could feel Vecna regenerating and he was afraid, terrified. He was trying to play it off cool but he just couldn't. One night Will wakes up from a nightmare seeing and feeling Vecna and he doesn't want to be anywhere but back in Michael's room sleeping with him like when they were little. Because of Hawkins destruction and the "gates of hell" many people moved out of it. Hawkins is slowly being crept up upon by the upside down which is now making it's way into reality because of Vecna and there's only one way to stop it and Will knows it.
