The day is August 11, 1872. Kathrine Du Pont's (Dew Pawn's) birthday. She is a quiet girl, different from others. She loves to study, read, and spend time alone in the forest. When she's not alone, she spends time with her only friend. James. James is the boy Kathrine's parents want her to marry. Both she and James do not want to get married at all. They'd like to live alone and be successful by themselves. 

However, one day, a new girl moves into town. A girl named Annie Smith. 

Kathrine has never had friends before. Much less friends who are girls, but she grows to be rather fond of Annie. Quite fond actually. She has a hard time understanding her new feelings. Much less expressing them to Annie.
