When the shadow side of your life is taking over and the family you are depending on, isn't there for you, sometimes the only way to escape are drugs and even if it's not helping her problems to go away, she'll do anything for these few minutes to feel the healing from the inside. Of course this doesn't help her, especially her friends are suffering under these conditions.
