"Jane-" I tried to form the word, to shape it into something that could keep her tethered to this world, to remind me of the name I should use like a shield. My own mouth wouldn't cooperate; failure clung to me like a second skin.
Her lips parted in a tremulous smile, the kind that begged forgiveness in advance for the burden she bore. "You have to let me go," she whispered, the words slipping out as if she were swallowing a sob. "I'll be okay."
"No," I breathed, a sound almost lost in the weight of the room. The word tasted like ash on my tongue, but it burned there nonetheless. I wanted to tell her to run, to vanish into shadow, to call upon the heavens and conjure a miracle. I wanted to tell her that the monarchy could endure without her blood on the blade-without her life burned behind her eyes.
