On Halloween 1981, Voldemort attacked Godric's Hallow in an attempt to kill James, Lily, and Harry Potter. He managed to kill just one. Harry Potter is taken to the Dursleys' by Hagrid under the orders of Albus too many names Dumbledore. This same too many names proclaims Harry to be the boy who lived and that James and Lily are dead; he didn't know that a certain overthinking and anxious werewolf managed to save his husband's best friend before he died.
Short and not dramatic version: Voldy attacked, Lily died, our lovely chocolate-loving wolf saved James in time but not Harry, and they all turned morally grey.
