The Fabulist is a wickedly funny tale of self loathing, self destruction, and ultimately self discovery as Frank Shaw, a failed novelist and dispirited blogger, gets an assignment to cover the Maui Classic Invitational, an annual pre-season college basketball tournament in Hawaii for an internet blog. But when Frank shucks the tournament to explore the island, pick golden caps with the locals, and hit on an attractive bartender, fantasy and reality soon blur into a wild hallucinogenic trip, thrusting him deep into his memory banks where he is forced to recall his past failures, relationships, and the decisions that lead him to his current state. As Frank ruminates on the mistakes of his past, he hurdles headlong into uncharted emotional territory on an ever-escalating adventure in a place he deems "Paradise."

The best decision I ever made was when I moved to paradise nine years ago. I've met and entertained many beautiful women while living here in Hawaii, with those women changing what I first thought would be paradise and making it to be more of an erotic heaven. I love women, and I love satisfying them. But the only way they make it to my bed is if they're tourists. Why? Because there are no ties, no feelings hurt, no strings attached, and I'll never see them again-just pure innocent sex satisfying both our needs. Now I'm on an airplane, going back to the one place I always said I would never step foot in ever again. Las Vegas. All because Vegas is where my best friend wants to have his bachelor party. Just because I'm not happy to be back in my hometown doesn't mean I can't have fun, right? After all, I can still do what I've been doing in Hawaii here in Vegas as there are always tourists roaming the casinos. Before my friends and I hit the casino, I made a thousand-dollar bet with my best friend that I couldn't land a woman in my bed before we returned to Hawaii-a bet I want no part of after meeting who I did. That bet will come to haunt me after we get back home, especially when we cross paths at my best friend's wedding. I was happy to see her, but she wasn't too pleased to see me, and let's just say somewhere I screwed up because my face not only saw her fist once, but it saw it twice. She just lit the fire in me, and I never thought I'd say this, but I guess my entertaining women days are over because right now, there's only one woman who I want to chase, and that's Leilani. Unexpected threesomes. Fighting midgets. Wrecking bathrooms. It isn't our grief that sets us apart, it is the manner in which we deal with it. Charlie Green is a mess. After surviving an accident that claimed the life of his partner and being sacked from his job, he's taken to throwing himself down the neck of every bottle of booze and into the arms of every amorous stranger that wanders across his zig-zagging path. In an increasingly desperate attempt to smother his grief, Charlie and five of his closest friends decide to ditch the materialistic bright lights of California and embark on an eight-thousand mile trip across the sea to Southeast Asia. There, caught like butterflies in a whirlwind of drug-fuelled hedonism and vice, this fellowship of idiots endeavours to figure out whether happiness is something that can ever be truly attained, or whether it's something that we spend our lives perpetually chasing. "Now, I'm not one to advocate doing drugs and then going off for a drive in the country or attempting to operate heavy machinery, but if one finds oneself in the position of having had a good snoot-full of Peruvian flake before being obliged to chuck on the fins and tank and hop into the ocean, then I'd be very much inclined to just not think too much about it and roll with the situation." Through the blur of drugs, alcohol and one-night stands, Charlie has to decide whether he's running away from the truth, seeking closure or simply heading along the slow road that leads to self-destruction.
