In the dystopian world of Madina City, officials are determined to enforce all rules and punish all offenders. So they've built Ranum Correctional Institute , where people, including kids, are incarcerated for even the most minor offenses.

And no one know Ranum Correctional Institute better than Harriet Maxwell. The daughter of a former guard, Maxwell can expertly navigate the place - including its secret tunnels and corridors. After her father's death, Maxwell is determined to follow in his footsteps, helping prisoners escape the cruel life so many of them have not truly earned.

But when Maxwell gets caught, she learns what it's like to be a prisoner herself. Now, like other inmates, she's locked in a tiny cell, released only for meals, and forced to play the game inside the "Sim" - a brutal virtual reality experiment designed to punish inmates for their "crimes."

Much of the idea of the Sim had been to provide closure for the victim. The ability and legal right to exact revenge on those who had wronged them. The Sim gives ultimate control over another human being. And control, for many, makes them drunk with power.

When guards begin forcing prisoners to play more frequently, Maxwell realizes that "the game" has other motives.

10 parts Ongoing
After dying in a tragic accident while heroically saving a student, teacher Harriet expects peace or at least, a chance at a new life. Instead, she awakens in a void, silent and pitch black... until a mechanical voice echoes in the dark. [Hello. I am the Childbearing System. Would you like to bear the heirs of the Son of Heaven across dimensions?] Confused and outraged, Harriet demands to know what's going on. She's single. She's never even had a boyfriend. But when she's told that refusal means her soul will vanish forever, her choices suddenly narrow. With no way out, Harriet accepts her fate and the darkness shatters into a dazzling starlit space. Her guide, System 227, explains: as a reward for her noble sacrifice, the Higher-Ups have granted her a unique purpose. Across countless worlds, powerful rulers the Sons of Heaven face extinction without heirs. Harriet must step into each world, take on a new identity, and ensure these legacies continue. The catch? Every world has its own rules, dangers, and challenges. From cold emperors and warlords to lonely immortals and cursed princes to emotionally damage CEO, Harriet's "partners" aren't exactly the easiest to handle. Armed with a strong will, a stubborn heart, and a system that insists on throwing her into chaotic romantic entanglements, Harriet embarks on a journey of survival, identity, and unexpected affection. But how many worlds must she conquer before she's free? And what happens when one of these so-called "missions" becomes something far more real? A/N: cover photo credits to Pinterest

| 𝟳𝘅 𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘𝗗 ·|| HUNGER GAMES x CINDER || ONC 2023 Honorable Mention Amidst the escalating unrest between the windborne utopian city of Lighthaven and its seedy, oppressed underbelly Fumedge, the Grand Duke of Lighthaven, Lucius Sextus, comes up with an ingenious solution. To provide much-wanted respite from the brewing conflict, and achieve the apparent-if-temporary unity, he organizes Gaslight Trials - a highly entertaining panem-et-circenses combat event in the Pits. The combatants may use all steam and thaumaturgy powered augmentations at their disposal, and there is only one rule: defeat, or be defeated. The reward for the last one standing? A chance to start their life anew. A brass key to the city of Lighthaven with a luxurious mansion to call their own within, as well as an aeroship to command. When eighteen-year-old Veda Igglesden steps forward to take her timeworn adoptive father's place in the fight, she might as well be signing her death-sentence. With her eyes fully set on the prize, act-first-think-later Veda must harness the power of technology to try and win for her Papa Otto. Decades of breathing in the toxic air of Fumedge did a number on the old inventor's lungs, and being able to live in the air-filtered Lighthaven would sure come in handy right about now. A high-flying adventure full of gadgetry and intrigue; a pleasing blend of steampunk and postapocalyptic. See Veda unravel the mysterious ploy behind the game's organization, and uncover the truth about her secret origins. 100 years ago, amidst WW3's nuclear bombing, a deadly virus was released in the atmosphere and nearly wiping out the humanity. It lives inside the human brain thriving on the empathy receptors, leading to irrational behaviour and ultimately brain death. To slow the damage, scientists created L.O.V.E, short for Living Off Vital Emotions, a nanovaccine that numbs the virus and switches off all strong emotions. As a last resort and with a dying planet, the Supreme Government created the City, a place to contain the infected survivors suitable for the experiment. Those in the first stages of illness became ideal candidates to receive the neuroinhibitor. Having their feelings restrained and their memory altered, those who come of age are designated a life partner through a Selection process, thus preserving the humankind. A few decades after the trial had started, scientists had a major breakthrough. The nanites, which are highly chemically reactive organisms, are changing their bio-engineered purpose when dopamine levels are high. With a new generation of nanoids, stronger and smarter to fight the battle, the virus doesn't have a chance. Many attempts were made to create a man-made version of synthetic dopamine and each time the outcome was a disaster. Their goal is to create new generations, immune to the virus. These are called Purebloods, the offsprings of those who find pure love, the only cure to save them from a violent death. Running out of time, the Experiment entered in its final stages. To minimize the threats, the Colonies have sent their best soldiers to oversee the trial and protect its key subjects. If only things were going according to plan, or better...stay hidden. With Iron Guard, the resistance outside the walls, hunting the Purebloods too, will the trial save human race before it's too late? #3 in #dystopianfuture (27.06.2020)
