Everyone's heard stories of how a rogue assassin came to be. Dead parents, a fight for survival, perhaps someone who takes pity on the teenaged child and nudges them towards leaving the past behind. This isn't that story. Elbereth Eukanova's parents aren't dead. His fight for survival was per his own choice. He became his own savior. 

Elbereth Eukanova has had the number 711492 tattooed on his left forearm since before he could remember. The number was just one of the many things that made him realize the Golden City he was born into was nothing more than a gilded cage.

(This is a stand-alone novel taking place in the same universe as "What Is Done" with a different protagonist. It also takes place a couple hundred years before the events of "What Is Done". The protagonist of this book is Lord Elbereth, a friend of Valka's, who can be seen in the flashback chapters of the What Is Done series.)
