Caroline cannot deal with her mother's death and in result, switches her humanity off. Transforming into the very kind of person she would have hated, She has no desire to come back. But someone else picks up the task, whether out of love for the woman he cares for or the hope that in saving her, he can save a piece of himself as well, he will go to whatever lengths it takes.
But then again, maybe being lost is the very reason Klaus will be the one to bring her back.
