Max loves Daniel. But not the way Daniel loves Max.
Max is in love with his soon-to-be ex-teammate and best friend. But Daniel only loves him as a friend. Or that is what Max thinks of the situation.

Max finds it very tough to let go and accept the fact Daniel won't be sitting in the seat next to him. Max tries to step away and ignore Daniel. That's the only way it doesn't hurt as much as it does. But he doesn't know he's only hurting Daniel.
