I look to the sky as I back down the road. I don't see it, but I hear it swiftly above the rooftops. I ignore the pain in my stomach and the irritation from my bare feet and run with no intention to stop.
Home is some ways away. I can hear its harsh steps traversing the skies above me. I approach my turn and halt as the shingles from the rooftop plummet to the ground before me. Startled, I look up at the silhouette covering the moon.
...
My curiosity foolishly pulls me a step further. The crunch of the leaves below me turns its focus on me and I see it clearly for what it is. It breathes powerfully as I tremble before it and yet his name just comes out.
"Emit?" I question. It continues close as I fight the urge to fall from its presence.
On all fours, it is the size of a bear, but standing before me, it towers higher than most ceilings. It's different than the winged beast we were used to. It is less human and broad with a mouth that rivals a wolf.
"Emit, it's me--Marcy," I utter. "Go back home for me... ok, Emit?"
Its powerful breath warms me with an exhale and then lands back on all fours. The anger returns to its eyes as I take a step back. Its claws dig into the ground and my eyes widen.
"Emit?"
It lunges forward and knocks me to the ground, scurrying back toward town. I watch as it climbs to the top of a building and disappears into the night. In a fit of relief, I drop my head into the ground.
