He hadn't screamed. That's what haunted me most. No cry, no sound-just a blur of fabric and hair dropping from the ledge like falling paper. I'd turned too late, eyes catching only the tail end of his descent. My body moved before thought did. I caught him-barely-but what I felt... smooth skin. No wings. No resistance.
