Fanfic
Matty receives letters all the time. A physical manifestation of teenage angst and trauma. Emotional baggage in the most literal form. They're all similar, not the same, but the praise and the devotion and the infatuation are always there. Until one day, a large manila envelope finds its way into the pile of tiny white letters, looking clinical and formal in nature... Matty is immediately drawn to it, and to the author, who gives no identifying information other than a single letter -- L. ** I based this fic off one I read several years ago on AO3 that I can no longer find. The content is different and I don't think that fic was ever finished, but I loved the plot idea and wanted to do something similar. If anyone knows what I'm talking about let me know so I can give credit to the author. ** just fyi -- this storyline has absolutely no basis in reality and TW for drug use, mentions of suicide, addiction, and abuse.

Wary of the decadence and skewed morals that her burgeoning music career might impose upon her, Joanna feels out of place at the rite-of-passage Notting Hill party her new manager has invited her to, until she encounters Matty - practically an old hand in the business, but sweetly untouched by their strange surroundings. The instincts and values Joanna used to cling to don't guide her now as well as they used to, and as the venues get bigger and the radio plays rack up, it becomes increasingly difficult to know what her friendship with Matty is really about. 'My ability to stay awake was waning, and I could feel myself dropping off, the darkness and warmth enveloping me. But somewhere in that liminal space, between consciousness and a blank stupor, I vaguely registered a hand finding mine across the sheets, fingers interlinking and holding it there, in the space between our faces.' (((* = mature content))) COMPLETED 19/11/20.
