Vincent Di Salvo became a father when he was 14. He and his girlfriend Maya McCoy were anxious but decided to welcome their baby boy into the world and love him unconditionally, even if they were young. Vincent's parents weren't happy that he got Maya pregnant so young but were supportive throughout Maya's pregnancy and helped them learn everything they had about having a baby.

On the other hand, Maya's parents were so disappointed in their daughter that they kicked her out of their house, so she moved in with The Di Salvos, who welcomed her with open arms.
Maya blended right in with the family and felt like she belonged, as did they.

Three years pass by with Nate's fourth birthday closing in, but Maya's parents show up, forcing her to move to Minnesota to live with them, or they'd take Nate from her. Maya's mother tells Vincent and his family she has to leave in a few days cause of a "family event and emergency " and that she will keep in contact with them, include them in Nate's life, and send pictures until Maya can move back to New York and raise him together as a family but.... she never did.
