She was an ugly girl. She accepted it by now. In fact, she was the first person to tell herself that. She wasn't even offended when others called her that. She didn't cry herself to sleep after hearing mean comments from girls at school. "Only a blind guy could fall in love with her."
And that's exactly what happened.
Francine Barns had a rare disease skin disease, Harlequin ichthyosis, that caused her skin to look like that of a burn victim. It was cracked and dry. Her eyes bulged out of her head. Those were her concerns, for a while. Her parents, though, were concerned about her longevity. Every day was like spinning a wheel of probability of dying.
Mason Alexander Johnson has been blind since birth. Everyone had always told him how good looking he was, but he never believed it. He didn't even know what was considered good looking. He didn't know what a "pretty face" looked like. He just knew girls thought his was. He liked to think that due to his lack of sight, God mitigated the blindness with a keen sense of wisdom and a knack for music.
As the old saying goes, love is blind.

"..or touch you." He says as he takes his hand and brushes it lightly down my arm and he snakes it back around my back pulling me even closer if that is possible. The corner of his mouth tilts upward slightly. I smile again. A smile!? A tiny one, but still. "Hm. So I got you to smile, that's progress, yeah? Can I get your name now?"
