22-year-old, Iridian Cantor, lives in a world with humans, or Auxiliaries, paired with one animal for a lifetime of cooperation. Before taking The Evaluation, Iridian had always known her goals. Become an Auxiliary of an animal she is proud of, and follow Main Advisor Iona's words of progress, creativity, and individuality.
When Iridian takes the long-awaited Evaluation, however, she receives an unexpected Phoenix and soon realizes that her goals may not be easily attainable as she had once believed and that being a Phoenix Auxiliary may bring a lot more burden than she can carry.
Through traversing different fantastical lands, from Center Assemblage to Volvanic Acropolis, Iridian must learn to fend off the notorious Phoenix Hunters and their leader, Malanthe, whose sole purpose is to obtain the legendary Phoenix Auxiliary's power, whatever that may be.
Along the way, Iridian meets other Auxiliaries, who help her through the countless mysteries and adventures, though not without their own betrayals and deceit. Iridian must face decisions that confront her identity as an Auxiliary and her role among the others she's journeyed with. She must ultimately prevail and retain back what was once hers, but find those around her may not all be what they seem to be. That they may all be nothing but flawed.
