After Mama kills her abusive boyfriend, she and eleven-year-old Lucy Hazel go on the run. They end up at a hotel in the countryside. At first, the hotel is the answer to Lucy's prayers. The owners ask no questions and even give Mama a job cleaning the rooms. But slowly, she starts to notice something strange about the hotel. There are never any new arrivals, only permanent guests. A girl wanders the hallway at night, covered in blood, but Mama never sees her. Then there is the horrible stench coming into room twenty-three, the only room Lucy isn't allowed to enter. The hotel stops feeling like the answer to Lucy's prayers and the beginning of a nightmare.
