Subaru wasn't the most attractive looking guy, he was pretty plain in his own opinion. Nor was he the most motivated or outstanding guy. He was a pretty lazy, shut-in, otaku really. Nothing motivated him at all to go out into the world and make something of himself. He was content with life as it was. Then, he was taken from his world and dropped in another. It was there he met him and his whole view changed. Suddenly, he was motivated.
