Brandon lives in a world where there are enhanced, caped superheroes and supervillians called the Altered. They can fly, shoot lasers from their eyes, shoot fire from their fists, and so much more.

Three years ago, there was a rebellion against the superhero team, The Assembly, a group of that consists of the world's most powerful heroes. The Champion, The Sonic, Firestar, The Aboriginal, The Falcon, and The Warrioress. The insurrection claimed the lives of both Altered as well as the humans-with one of them being Brandon's Abuelita, Sofia De Martin.

After another devastating turn of events, Brandon, becomes what he hates the most, an Altered. The question is: "Will he use his powers for the good of mankind?" or "Will he unleash hell on those who
took his Abuelita away?"

J.M. Irving delivers another dark, riveting novel, that combines thriller, horror, and the superhero genre together with twists and turns that yield for an unputdownable story.

In the not-so-distant future evolved humans emerged. Those who had powers that broke conventional laws of physics, chemistry, and biology were dubbed E.H.s (evolved humans); it was wondrous for a time. Of course if there was power to be used there would be those who misuse. To that end the evolved humans police department was formed to deal with all crime committed by or connected to E.H.s, a force entirely comprised of E.H.s trained to stop and capture any E.H. breaking the law. Adlet Blacksteel is the newest edition to the E.H.P.D., his skills and experience as a hostage extractor makes him an invaluable edition. Joined by his new partner, Jenna Jones, he pursues a secretive manhunt for the Soldiers Of The New World, an underground E.H. crime organization that has a hand in all that is illegal, and their mysterious leader: String, who, seemingly, has eyes and ears everywhere. While Adlet and Jenna intend on doing this by the books, their unsavory past with two of String's captains may muddy their judgement, or, more accurately, it already has. As String's ambitions grow beyond just controlling the city's underbelly Adlet and Jenna are forced to take action with an ally he did not desire. While prejudice against E.H.s reaches it's peak because of a horrific tragedy, the Soldiers of the New World waste no time to expand their reach and rally for their cause of taking over the city. Adlet goes to the edge of sacrificing everything and back again. On the way, betrayal awaits at every corner.
