Finding myself locked in a modern-day castle surrounded by seven domineering older brothers and an equally forbidding father, this fairytale was far from the usual light-hearted children's tales. But my life wasn't a fairytale, so it was no surprise these men had staked their claim on me, only asking for a piece of my heart, a piece of my trust, in return.
If this is the damsel was sacrificing, it is no wonder that storybook authors have overlooked this version of events. They would surely fear that all little girls might yearn to become the princess of the villain.
Yet, in the beginning, I, too, was blissfully unaware of the fuller narrative beyond the fairy tale version. I wasted precious time longing for a prince to steal me away from their foreboding prison, not realizing that the true knights in shining armor were already by my side, ready to dispel any thoughts of inadequacy, fear, or worry, the sole princess of the castle might have.
This is my dark, twisted take on the popular Mafia, Older Brothers/Younger Sister, and Lost/Found Daughter/Sister tropes.
