This book is a sequel to Mortance: A Miscarriage of Hope. If you have not read that book, you will not enjoy this one as much. One princess is dead, another broken, the world is at war, and the Silver Girl has awoken. The end of the Thousand-Year War that has shaken Ert for twelve-hundred and twenty years has begun. Knights and Princesses and Kings and commonfolk alike are all in danger now, for war does not discriminate in its distruction. As the realm burns, treachery and deception runs rampant in the south. A warrior runs from her home in the east with hopes of repentance. On the seas in the west, two captains and a prince mourn in the shadow of death. Meanwhile, the Silver Girl recovers from tragedy, and the unexpected snows of summer begin to fall in Viri. Dark times lie ahead. Cover designed by the most excellent @apprehensiveanne (again)

*THIS NOVEL IS A SEQUEL TO WILD CARD & CANNOT BE READ AS A STANDALONE* There is a legend that one in four royal advisor-mages will betray their monarch, overthrow them for power. *** Gwenore, the new Queen of Acewood, is on a throne most would kill for. Especially her mermaid half-sister, a power-hungry mage on the loose, and a rogue knave with royal blood on his hands. Her sisters and Aces advise her to be patient, but she wants to stop the threats to her kingdom before they worsen. And before she's forced to marry some high-bred noble who's only interested in her for her position. But Gwenore is surrounded by fickle foes and spies she can't identify, and will soon see that her impatience has brought her to waters too deep to swim in. Those who wish for her demise are close, too close... and those she trusts are far and few between. Can Gwenore survive the menaces to her person and restore balance to her home before it's too late?
