Virgil is an engineer. Normally, this would be a very useful career, but in a world where anything that doesn't work can be imbued with magic until it does, all people like Virgil are good for is slapping together the materials and handing it over with the credit still attached. 

But, when Virgil hears about an ancient city known for being on the fast track for development, part of which has now been found, he wonders if the ancient race of builders and engineers might have anything to work with. A dragon. Virgil after being cursed was hunted down by "Brave warriors" who wanted to bring home his head to the king to prove they were worthy of taking the position of crowned king when he passes. Of course, Logan being crown prince didn't believe in this silly nonsense his father told the villagers about this dragon. He just loved learning about his kingdom through history books and art. Logan was wandering the village with some of his guards when he heard the commotion, he went and saw someone about to cut off a woodland creatures antlers, the poor creature who was about to be beaten and sent to his father to be imprisoned, was innocent! All he wanted was to know the villagers! He later revealed his name was Patton. Was all the rumors about his village being magical real? Logan was prepared to find out.

After his caring mother is killed in a horrible car crash that should have killed Virgil as well, his father realizes that Heavens angels are trying to send Virgil back to Hell despite him not doing anything bad. There he meets an annoying kid who somehow befriends him, but little does he know the kid was sent by his father to protect him. His job is to guide souls to the after life, or if they turn malevolent, cut them down. The moment he was assigned to a city, he already had a death to take care of. Except, it turned out to be a false alarm since the man survived. Virgil wouldn't have cared too much since it happens often, but now that man can see him and other spirits.
