Sam is nervous, passionate and more than a little naive. All long limbs and not enough confidence to take up space with them. A secret lover of poetry who could never bring himself to leave his religious small town despite feeling smothered by it all.

Reese is loud, withdrawn, and fiercely independent. Growing up on the 'wrong side of the tracks' he was raised by his tia who taught him the golden rule of life when he was younger: The only person worth relying on is yourself. Now all grown up he follows that rule to a t, unapologetically himself.

Neither of them run in the same circles, but when a bump in the road leaves Sam stranded the two meet and quickly develop an unlikely friendship that seems to have to potential for more, but can either of them overcome their upbringings to embrace it?

For 17-year-old high school senior Evan Brooks, life could be better. He's a social outcast at school, stuck in a rural Alabama small town he never wanted to move to, and he's got a secret he's desperately trying to keep: he's gay. When he embarks on a weekend vacation to the Florida panhandle with his hypermasculine brother, homophobic stepdad, and aloof mother, none of them can anticipate how much a simple 3-day trip will change their lives forever... **2025 Update: Hi! This was my very first attempt at crafting an entire story from scratch all the way back in 2020, and I'd like to think my writing has since improved. I've started working on a big rewrite project, so stay tuned for a newly enhanced story! Please visit the last chapter (2025 Rewrite Info/Updates) for more details. In the meantime, the original story will remain here in full - just know that I know some parts of it are cringe lol. I hope you still enjoy it though! :) Some details have changed between this story and Road to Rockdale in anticipation of the rewrite, so please excuse some inconsistencies if you're coming from that story. I promise everything will line up eventually! CONTENT WARNING/TRIGGERS: Please note that this story contains very strong language at times and some mature themes. Some characters face emotional abuse. There is also a small amount of physical abuse, but it is mostly implied apart from one scene which is not extremely graphic. Some characters are homophobic, and a slur is used a handful of times.

59 parts Complete

Everyone's a little trapped in their own heads. Cassian is the only child of very wealthy parents and has grown up being moulded to their expectations of him. He's a great son and a model student while being popular and confident and he consciously strives to be perfect, so much so that he has never even had an unscheduled moment to breathe or think and the thought of making a mistake terrifies him. Growing up in a household where he is basically the caretaker of his little brother, Theodore is plagued by anxiety that he keeps to himself as he tries to make his family look as normal as possible to people on the outside so that he will not lose his brother. When the quiet, lonely Theodore transfers to his school, Cassian cannot help gravitating towards the new kid despite the disapproval of his friends and parents. He's determined to pull Theodore out of his shell only to realise he may be in one himself.
