July 4th, 2032. An alien corpse washes up on a placid beach along the Gulf of Mexico. It is discovered by a 23-year-old musician, Summer Malone, and her roving band of free spirits, who lead lives wandering railways outside the new world system of deeply corrupt government. The discovery leads them to realize that Ego Corp, a global technocracy specializing in brain implants, is actually an extraterrestrial thought virus attempting to further enslave mankind by unlocking the secret of human fear. Summer's band follow a winding path myriad, E'deth, who has nascent world-shattering psychic powers that may tip the balance if only she can unlock them. The band struggles to find an answer to the impending threat, and to survive the forces sent to destroy them by the man known only as Mr. Shades, a semi-human general of the Grey Machine. But they face many dangers including mind-rending virtuality manipulation and lethal political intrigue along their journey. Will Summer, E'deth, and their eclectic group succeed in thwarting the goals of the Grey Machine, and survive a final dramatic encounter with Shades' mind-controlled troops?

But power never comes without danger. The Migrant Fleet already fears contamination. Geth attacks grow bolder. A mysterious human organization hunts the symbiote across the galaxy. And as the Reaper threat silently rises, Tali finds herself caught between loyalty to her people, her growing independence, and a connection with Agony that feels as terrifying as it is comforting.
