Sue Gilbert lived a pretty hard life in her twenty-six years so far. Her dad died when she was ten, her mother when she was twenty-four, and she and her sister barely spoke anymore. Things got hard for the Gilbert girls after their dad died. Their mom struggled to get by alone and ended up marrying an abusive man when she was thirteen. This marriage caused a strain between Sue, her sister and their mother--so much so that Sue moved out at eighteen for college and never came back again. Sue was in a long-term relationship with a man named Joshua but had been unhappy for the past year but was finding it hard to leave. She's been dealt her cards and so far it's really been a life full of trauma and she truly felt she was going to have a break down.

Emily Dickinson has been around for all of it... every high and every low. The girls met when they were seven years old in school and made a promise that they would be friends forever. And they've kept that promise. Emily has been there for Sue through everything. She was by her side when her dad passed when they were young, always letting Sue come sleep over her house when her step-dad was causing problems, she was there for her when her mother died a couple of years ago and she would be there for her through everything else, too.

When things start to get rocky with Sue and her partner, the girls find themselves getting closer. Sue confide's in Emily like she always had and things become emotional and raw between them. They start seeing more of each other, causing more of a rift between Sue and Joshua. The girls become each other's escape from the world around them more than they've ever been and emotions start to get hot and heavy as their relationship with each other changes.
