It is not long before Jago, the ruler of Saffire, learns that a woman on Saffire is pregnant and he unleashes all his power to prevent the birth. Jago will not give up power. Demalynn is surprised to find out she is the Helper, but is astounded to learn the identity of the Gravidarum. Demalynn must battle to stay alive and fumbles towards the realization that Aiden is much more than a close friend. She is certain, with the certainty that only a seventeen-year-old can possess, that Aiden is her only true love. The sky isn't the beautiful blue, in fact it's a gloomy grey all the time. In some places, it's even tinted green. The world is so contaminated, that everyone is forced to wear gas masks, and you're lucky if you haven't been affected by it. What the chemicals do to many people and animals who didn't take the time to wear their gas masks is a horror. It's like a nightmare that has come true. 16 year olds, Jaylynn and Luke are both struggling to survive in this dangerous world.
