Hear me out: what if the roles were reversed?
What if Larry was the only one who believed Sal about the ghosts, what if Sal is diagnosed with ptsd and maybe a few other things and has serious depression episodes, and one episode is just too much... leaving Larry without his best friend, before he even gets a chance to tell him how he felt.
