In the depths of the Caspian Sea, a mystical town called Seabum is home to a young black mermaid named Shell Swarthy. Her ancestors were enslaved Africans who miraculously survived the transatlantic slave trade by being thrown overboard, only to find refuge beneath the ocean's dark blue waters.
As a devout follower of Poseidon, the King of the Seas, Shell's community prepares for the royal coral wedding, a grand celebration that will take place in two sea surfs. Shell, a tenth-generation Mermaid, serves as an under Chef in the castle of Prince Persia Melas, a member of the royal family. Her life is one of duty and service, bound to the Melas household.
The night of Prince Persia's engagement party is a momentous occasion, attracting dignitaries and aristocrats from the seven salty seas. Legend has it that Poseidon touched Persia with his trident at birth, bestowing a mysterious blessing. The prophecy foretells that once Persia takes a queen, Poseidon will reveal the gift and guide his life's path.
However, on the eve of the engagement party, Persia is kidnapped by ruthless underwater mercenaries, leaving everyone baffled. Shell is coerced into accompanying the kidnappers, as they believe she possesses the unique ability to navigate treacherous waters hidden from ordinary Merfolk.
With Persia's life hanging in the balance, Shell must keep him safe while concealing her own secrets and desires. Can this ordinary Melanin Mermaid help Persia find his way back home, all while staying true to herself?
