It's a new year at Karasuno High School, and the boys volleyball club has six new applicants. However, on the first day of practices, three of the applicants get into a fight and get suspended from club activities. 

These applicants are Hinata Shoyo, Kageyama Tobio, and Udai Takashi. In order to restore what little pride they had in the first place, they challenge the captain to a match. If they win, then they get to join in with club activities. If they lose, then Kageyama doesn't get to be a setter anymore. 

The three first years must now work together to get back in the captain's good graces. Will they be able to work together despite their disagreements and win the match or will Kageyama be doomed to spend his first year in high school as a wing spiker??
