Five years ago, Riley's best friend, James, was taken by a tornado right in front of her. Now, on the anniversary of his disappearance, Riley is taken away by an all-too-similar tornado. Then James tells her that he previously worked for the Emperor, but refuses to go into detail about it, and still insists on accompanying her to the meeting. She plans to ask this Emperor about her brand, marking her as an "Empath," after James, and their plant-humanoid friend Lumino, tells her it hasn't appeared on a human in millenia. The tornado-humanoid had told her she was chosen for this realm, but Riley can't decide whether they were lying, if James had something to do with it, or if it's because of her empath brand.

Quickly I grab another knife and throws it over my shoulder, hitting bulls' eye. He glares at me, and the room has gone completely silent. That's when I discover that I may have gone too far with the insanely possessive highness, even though I'm grateful for the extra lessons he gives me. Then suddenly everyone hurries out of the training area. Leaving me alone with the growling, red eyed alpha.
