Nico felt like Icarus. Fly too close to the sun, and your wings will melt. Fly too close to the sea, your wings will grow heavy. Nico had already flown too close to the sea. He had allowed his infatuation with Percy to rule his life, his decisions, for far to many years. His wings had grown heavy, and he'd drowned. Icarus had made a mistake. He strayed too far, entranced by the kindness of the light. The dark wouldn't be as welcoming, ushering you in with no hesitancy and crossed arms. That didn't work out so well for Icarus. So, Nico would allow this filter, this light, to cover him, shroud him in kindness, and possibility, and warmth. But he would not cross further. Astren City, and all surrounding area, have the highest crime rate in the northern part of the country. Dozens of crime families constantly trying to take the throne, as well as corruption lurking around every corner, do not aid in that fact at all. Salem Heart's father, Jack Heart, happens to be the Astren City Chief of Police, a title which holds a lot of weight and a rank that claims even more power. He's well respected, and amazing at his job. That said, greatness is expected of Salem as well. Of course that isn't a problem, Salem will always be loyal to the law. He was raised by it, and upholding it is his future career aspiration. He thinks he has his life figured out. The fact that his ex-boyfriend comes from a notorious crime family, and has been arrested several times by Jack's own department, doesn't matter. Salem's passed that, he's over Atlas Marino and he always will be. He will ignore that scratch in his record, and cover it up with his success. Salem is offered a job to help with an investigation that could benefit his future career astronomically. He thinks it's a win-win situation, he gets the recognition he desires, and the streets will be that much safer. It's all black and white to him, easy to understand. He likes the order, and he craves the accomplishment of defeating bad with good. It's all black and white. Until he gets caught in the grey. 17 year old Gladion's life is short. He lives by himself because his sister, Lillie, is off in Kanto taking care of their sick mother. Also not even wanting to even speak a word of his father. His sister suggest he go back to high school and actually learn something. Because he was a high school drop out. He brushed off the idea in her face, but went anyways, when she went. She doesn't know. School didn't help the situation the teen was already in. It made it grow worse. All the studying, the crappy teachers, the homework. Stress kept on building up. He had no family, they where gone or out of the region. He was alone, by himself, and he wanted to keep it that way. He's also full-time at college, when he's 'working', he has the opportunity to do homework; however, he prefers to just read. Not even Nico's sister knew yet, but now he is forced to deal with this friend of a friend, who knows his secret. At work one night, he and his mythology book are interrupted by someone actually coming into the shop. Who could need a coffee at midnight? Midnight Coffee shares its storyline with my book Coffee at Midnight, these are written to play with different perspectives in storytelling. Midnight Coffee was written first, is told strictly from Nico's perspective, and has a cast of Percy Jackson characters. Coffee at Midnight is told strictly from Will's perspective, has a cast of Magnus Chase characters, and includes bonus scenes between the two. Skylar Hall can't remember a single time in his life that he has had his shit together. His brother, Jessie Hall, is the complete opposite. The guy is outgoing, has excellent grades, and tons of friends. Of course, Skylar has friends too, but they have a tendency to get him into trouble. Jessie has good friends. Well, except one. His best friend, Ashton Rivera. That guy sucks, Skylar can't remember a single time in his life he could stand him. He just loves to get a rise out of Skylar, loves to piss him off to no end. The fact that they hooked up once is his main ammunition, and it drives Skylar insane. The things he'd do for that guy to leave him alone for good. Skylar, on the other hand, is an addict with absolutely no self preservation and far too many enemies to count. He gets horrible grades, and participates in even worse stunts for his friend's channel online. He is basically injured at all times, and has racked up enough money in hospital bills for his dad-Mayor Vince Hall-to finally get fed up. So, after a series of bad choices, Skylar is told that one more incident will result in him being kicked out of the house. He doesn't take the threat all that seriously, until Jessie-his only protection-is accepted into a college hours away and will be leaving him. That guy vouching for him is basically the only reason that Skylar's dad has put up with his least favorite son's shenanigans all these years. So, the threat starts to feel more real. Then, it happens, and the only person left for Skylar to rely on is Ashton Rivera-who he begins to realize has some serious secrets. Secrets not even Jessie knows.
