"Starflower James wasn't stupid. She had been to enough schools and met enough people to know when they didn't like you. 

She hated that it had to go that way with her first "friend" here in Greenwood. Benny seemed like such a nice boy, and she thought their first interaction had gone swell. After she had left the hospital from visiting him, she really thought they could become good friends. But then she dared his best friends to play baseball with her, and they quickly replaced broken-armed Benny with her."

My inspirations for this story come from the works of David Mickey Evans and Jerry Spinelli.

Rowan has always had problems making friends because she's always known to be very unfriendly, but Benny declines thinking she's trying to hit on him, (he's a little bit too used to that) when in reality Rowan finds him quite repetitive. Benny immediately becomes intrigued at the fact Rowan doesn't have interest in him, but what can he do?
