Peter Gruenwald is a soldier struggling to maintain his atheist beliefs on the battlefield. He finds himself in a labyrinth of tunnels and dugouts underneath the crater-pocked no-mans-land after an artillery barrage collapses his position. The constant sound of a church organ beckons him in the deep. He presses on through narrow corridors in search of an exit, still rocked by the loss of his friend, Albert, in the shelling.

He finds other soldiers trapped down here like him, some even belonging to the enemy. They try to find a way out, despite national rivalries and the many signs left by previous soldiers that any attempt at escape is futile. Doubt and mistrust soon beset them. Peter too finds accepting an enemy's help difficult, all the while also struggling with feelings of guilt for Albert's death.

But a danger dwells in the deepness of the endless shafts and dim tunnels. One that stifles ideas of war and nationhood and prays on old regrets and past demons. And whenever the church organ changes its notes, fog seeps in from every seam and corner and brings with it death and despair.
