Although being born as the daughter of the king Mirabel was no princess. Her mother was the King's concubine and when word reached the queen that Mirabel's mother was pregnant with her, she ordered that Mirabel be killed soon after birth. Mirabel's mother pleaded with the king and queen until a compromise was reached. Mirabel could only stay as a slave and was not allowed to see her mother. So Mirabel and her friend Tina who suffered a similar fate only knew life as slaves and had no hope for anything beyond that.
