A thief, two guards, and a princess are on a mission. Sounds like the start of a bad joke, right? Mayline never expected to be given a mission by the king himself, especially since she was prepared to be executed. Travel to the neighboring kingdom, sneak in and steal an object, get out. Sounds simple enough. Only this mission is anything but simple. It's filled with lies, betrayal, love and secrets that cause Mayline to question what her true intentions are. Jax suppressed his urge to roll his eyes at Castilla's question again. Was it not obvious that he had to say it to her? He spun her around, and one arm stayed around her waist firmly; the hand rested on the small of her warm back. His other hand tilted her chin up. So he could look into her endless forest gaze. His eyes had changed to their fiery storm. "I don't know what to call it as yet, Castilla. But deep down, I knew you were meant for me, and I was never going to let go. I offered the alliance because I could keep you safe and not keep you against your own will. To give you a purpose that I know your heart truly desires. I want you by my side. If I had just asked, you wouldn't have stayed." When Castilla learned that all she knew was a lie, and all that she would learn would be the truth. Would she pick the right side? Was there even a right one to begin with? The enemy was neither a foe nor a friend. He asked, and she agreed.
