Every 5 years every 16 year old in the the Kingdom of Veersa goes to the Academy of the Chosen to see if they are unique or talented enough to be claimed by one of the Elder gods.
There are 10 Elder gods: Kaya goddess of the earth, Mykael god of water, Ciara goddess of the arts, Klotho goddess of smarts, Skyra goddess of the sky, Lars god of fire, Dolores goddess of the moon and stars, Scion god of war and combat. There is are two more Elder gods, Mono who is basically the elder god equivalent of Voldemort and Veers which our lovely Kingdom is named after. She is the Elder god queen, the supreme ruler of everything. Veers is the goddess of life.
Only two get claimed by Veers while every other Elder god claimed five. If you do get claimed you go to the academy for five years, learning how to control the power the god that claimed you gave to you.
