Starlings Pagan

Located in Vermont, Starling is a little town that is constantly shrouded in clouds and snow. Ivar, who is eight-years-old, lives on the outskirts of the town, and flees through her bedroom window after her family is slain in the dark of night. She receives three orders from her mother before she is shot: "Don't let them see you." "Whoever asks you who you are, ignore them." "Show no reason for empathy."

Ivar, however, finds herself evading looks from strangers in the town after leaving her house. When she finds a boy who reveals the richness of the world to her, she refuses following her mother's orders. As she starts to piece together the truth about the murder, Iris adopts an entirely new perspective on the world.
