In 1941, the United States of America declared war on the German Reich and the Empire of Japan, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii. Given the need for soldiers to join in on the war effort, the U.S. drafted around 10 million men, of which 65 thousand were Puerto Rican. Cesar was one of these Puerto Ricans sent to war, having to leave his family behind. Separation, dread, uncertainty, fear, and stress are some of the many feelings the pair had to endure, hoping they might see each other again in the future.
