"Don't let me be alone," he murmured. His head dripping heavy into the weight of my lap. For the first time Alina felt like she saw him. Not the darkling, or the black heretic. Not the roles he had forced him self to play, not the narrative that had for-written him as the villain. But the young-brilliant, blessed young soul who only wanted to make friends, who had been told he would outlive life its self. She saw the scared, boy, who was as afraid of the dark as she was. Her hands made soothing circles over his back and she pulled him closer letting her head fall down to his. She felt the beating of his heart slow, the warmth fading. Leaning close, whispering tentatively into his ear. "Your not the villain in my narrative, Alexander," her breath shuddered, the tears forcing her voice to break "Your not alone, I will mourn you even when the world rejoices in your absence. I will feel the space you filled in my soul. Your not the villain, Alexander. " She never felt his chest rise again. What if Ruin & Rising ended differently? What would happen when the darkling showed up in Rule of Wolves? This is my rewrite where Alina can actually express emotions.

"What do you want, Matteo? What exactly could you want from me?" I asked honestly. I couldn't keep pretending like this wasn't tearing me apart. It felt like he was toying with me, pulling me back into his world where nothing ever made sense. His expression softened for a second. His blue eyes met mine, full of this strange intensity I couldn't ignore. I swear, it was like they were staring straight through me, but not in the cold, distant way. No, this was different. It felt... personal. "I want you back, Alina," he said, his voice, low. "You don't belong anywhere but here. With me." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ten years ago, After the master of the Wainwright estate died, threats came against Alina and staying meant her inevitable end. She abandoned everything. Her home, her peace, her duties and the boy she swore to protect......everything. Believing she had successfully gotten her life together and left the past behind. Alina is then discovered and kidnapped by the boy she had betrayed and abandoned ten years ago. More of a man than a boy, Matteo who has become the head of the house is more ruthless and unforgiven than his own father. And now, Alina must suffer for the consequences of her actions. She ran once before. But how can she escape from her obsessive master now? Or has her past finally caught up to her.
