My face is a little wet, the carpets are moist. Wait- my eyes widened. Carpets! There aren't carpets in the nurse's office. Where am I?! My vision finally came back to me, I saw A yellowish-beige wall, multiple actually. It looked like a maze of some sorts. There was a white trim on the bottom of the walls, it looked like it hadn't been washed in ages. There was a slight pattern on the walls, a darker shade of the yellow-beige, something out of a nursing home perhaps. The first in a series of short stories in "The D-Word" collection, "Watching" is the story of a young immigrant to Canada named Kali. After graduating from high school she is married off by her father to a much older family friend who she soon discovers has an unusual hobby. Walter is physically repugnant to Kali and she's extremely grateful he does not have sex with her. But she wonders what he does in his room where he increasingly spends most of his time. After Walter loses his job he renovates his basement and selects an attractive university student, Stephen, as the tenant. A few months later he informs Kali that they will be visiting the basement apartment and Stephen the following evening and that she needs to get a good night's sleep and bathe following work the next day. This story is based on a divorce case I edited many years ago while working at my first job as a legal editor for a publishing company. As I edited these cases I learned over and over again that truth can indeed be stranger and even kinkier than fiction.

In my nightmares I am trapped on a mental ward. I can't move my hands without feeling the restriction of the straps. My head is as clear, no trace of the "madness." I strain against the black polyester with every ounce of strength and still I can't budge. My back hurts right to the base of my spine. Saliva is pooling in the back of my mouth. The staff have gone. I am alone. My heart pounds, ready to explode; my eyes scan left and right for signs of someone coming to help. No-one. Worn green curtains hang limp on flaking chrome rings and though the gap passers by pay me no attention at all.

I woke up in a strange room. It seemed to be designed for a proper girl, someone completely different to me. The walls were pastel blue, the bed sheets were baby blue with grey cushions and throws and the carpet was a light shade of grey. The room was decorated with little touches that made it like a little girls room such as fairy lights and small figurines. I didn't know where I was but at least I was well catered for. When I turned around I realised there was a window behind me and behind the window was another girl. I knocked hard on the window and watched her turn around. "Hi can you help me? Why I am here?" I asked. "Be careful there are cameras about! All i know is we were brought here to be the perfect girls. I'm sorry I've got to go."
