In October 1991, two campers were attacked by a bear on an island in Algonquin Park, 3000 square miles of wilderness. Their partially eaten remains were found five days later. A large male black bear was standing guard over their bodies.
The summer after the attack, I worked as a camp counselor in Algonquin Park. I heard many stories and theories about what happened. They were whispers around the campfire at night, all of us searching for the consolation of control, the comfort of story.
I have encountered many bears in the wilderness since then. I know that it was an unusual event. Still, more than twenty years later the bear attack haunts me. Why did it happen?
When I made plans to take my family on a canoe trip in Algonquin Park, I found myself wanting answers. I started a search.
My novel THE BEAR is based on that search. The story comes from my memories and research of this attack. When I started to write the novel, I had a child's voice in my head. I made it about a family. I added the kids.

The Story of Midnight
"Who's out there?" One of the men yelled. Of course only silence met them. I remained quiet and waited for the group to start moving again. "Maybe it was just an animal." Someone whispered. The person, who I assumed was the captain of the small squad, signaled for them to walk again. They clearly showed fear as they kept going; brandishing their weapons to guard themselves with. "Two are holding lanterns. I'll tell you when you're too close to them." I heard my friend whisper in my ear. I followed the men as I picked up another branch and waited for the right time to break it. They continued to walk through the forest, turning their heads in every direction as if an animal might lunge at them and rip their throats out. I guess in a way I was going to do that. "Go back a few feet." My friend whispered. I carefully distanced myself from the group and waited. "Where is she?" I quickly snapped the stick as soon as he finished asking the question. They stopped and two soldiers raised their lanterns to shine its light in the darkness. I quickly hid behind a tree before both of them turned where I was. A low frustrated growl came from one of the men, "The girl's playing with us. She's out here following our every move." How paranoia can cloud the mind. At nine years old, Silver decided to leave her village for the forest. Since then, she's been hunted; everyday is a fight for her life, every breath she takes could be her last, but she's determined to stay alive. The Drafted Reality and Dreams
It was a dark cold night-the night where the birds lay dead on the cold ground, listening in to the deceased whispers. This is the night where blood was once spilled. Jeremy hid behind a tree, holding on his thigh-his thigh was bleeding as he got stabbed. Jeremy looked at his wound, cursing under his breath. Jeremy looked around to see if anyone was nearby, there wasn't anyone nearby but he could hear the screaming of his pals. He could do nothing but to weep, he got out of his hiding spot and went deeper into the woods. He was wincing in pain as he dragged his injured leg. It was dark, too dark to the point even the moonlight couldn't provide light. Jeremy tripped over a tree root, he winced in pain, squeezing his injured thigh in pain. He soon heard a twig being snapped close to him. He pulled himself together, getting back on his feet. Dragging his leg once more. This time he raised the pace, panicking as he knew that he was being followed. He soon came across an abandoned truck that was in a small field. He smiled in relief, getting inside of the truck. He heard movement from his right, seeing a silhouette of a being that was coming closer to him. He panicked, climbing to the other seat to close the door. Once the door was closed, he locked the doors-backing away after. The door handle was being pulled aggressively but soon stopped. He took off his jacket and wrapped it around his thigh, he winced in pain as he made it tight. He looked around the truck, trying not to move too much. He eventually found a pen and a piece of paper. This is a story of Bonnie, she is taken in by Aidan Lucado and becomes his sister and lives in Victoria Village, but what will happen when a stranger in black shows up and talks to her about a power that she wields! Curious can get you Killed
In Ostego, Michigan, Joseph gets new neighbors. Always an exciting thing since it never happens to this teen living in 1948. Soon, though, he'll discover that his new neighbors are a bit off. Ok a lot of bit off. With his curiosity getting the best of him, he looks deeper into their lives and begins to uncover odd things about them which, in the end, might be his downfall. Curiosity killed the cat. He'll realize he should have listened to that old adage when he discovers they aren't human and that one of them has a taste for blood. Human blood. Will he survive, or will he be destroyed and never seen again, his body lost somewhere in the expansive forests and beaches of Northern Michigan's dune land wilderness. I've had much fun with this story, making it go deeper than I'd initially intended. You'll see what I mean as you get to the end. A new addition to this is that I've decided to write a second book that will be a continuation of this story and potentially, if things work out, a third would then be forthcoming. Currently, its title is 'Terror in the Town'. Just to make sure people don't think I spelled wrong or placed the city of Otsego in the wrong place, Ostego is a fictional town that serves as the place for many of my stories. I hope you enjoy it.
