This is one snapshot of how anxiety can look in a person's life... and how one woman copes with it, still living a full, joyful life. This is a super short story I wrote as part of Coffee Community's October contest (the theme is mental health).

"There comes a point where you no longer care if there's a light at the end of the tunnel or not. You're just sick of the tunnel." - Who I am doesn't matter. How I got here doesn't matter. What matters now is I'm getting help, right? That's what they tell me here. They tell me that the road to recovery feels like a terrible butt fuck, but the fact that you're on the path to begin with, is all that matters. So as I sit in this circle of fuck ups, I realize just how different I am from them. I didn't attempt suicide because my mother was a crack addict who didn't want me. My father wasn't abusive. I didn't have a sibling die in a car accident. I was never really bullied either. I attempted suicide because, for the first time in years, I thought I had found something that could make me feel again... and after not feeling much at all for far too long, perhaps I went a bit overboardComplete

My life was simple and easy. A bit lonely but I liked it. It wasn't until I literally crashed into the one who would change my life forever. My world got turned upside down and everything changed. And he was in the middle of it all. I realized that the girl I was doesn't exist anymore. Although my life doesn't make any sense now, I know one thing. I wasn't living until I met him. __________________ "YOU ARE MINE AND MINE ALONE!!!" He yells at me as his grips tightens around my wrist. I wince from the pain but he doesn't notice it. "He better keep his hands off you or there will be consequences, this dagger is the only thing that can kill him for good" He whispers in my ear and laughs cruelly. "What are you going to do?" I ask. My voice nearly cracks. "I'm going to kill him" He says laughing and takes up a dagger. "No, please, no" I whisper. The tears roll down my face. He throws me down to the floor, then walks out with the dagger. My stories are organized by emotional theme, beginning with one story about emotion in general, and then moving through stories expressing distractedness, frustration, argument, love, fear, grief, sadness, humor, innocence, and self-love. About a year ago, I discovered my love for the short story and decided to build a collection of shorter works. I'm so glad I did; the variety of plots, characters, and settings I got to explore taught me so much, and I am beyond pleased with what I have to share.
