This story is also being posted on RoyalRoad.com On the western shores of Kliskorios, a King sits without an heir. With his three children unwilling to allow each other to sit upon the throne, and a realm unable to decide the legal successor, the Kingdom of Teleytaios, strongest of the Heptarchy, stands on the brink of civil war, vultures circling all the while. King Cordan's bastard son has proven himself in battle and rulership both in the last half a decade, though the coming challenges will put to test even the greatest of his efforts. After all, to kill an enemy is one thing, but what about his own siblings? There is no man as accursed as the kinslayer, so the saying goes. The royal daughter, ever a staunch traditionalist and dangerous opponent, stacks the cards and the court in her favour whilst her brothers, bastard and trueborn both, waste away far from the capital. With the masses of dispossessed lords and ladies of the kingdom at her beck and call, there are few who find themselves outside of her reach. The King's trueborn son, widely regarded as being mad and violent, will act as the wildcard in the coming feud. Whoever he chooses to support will surely triumph, though perhaps there is more to the youngest prince than meets the eye? But there is more to the rising tensions than a simple succession crisis. Ancient things are waking up the world over; Brythonic sailors let slip the things they have glimpsed in the Ouroborisian Sea in Anarian taverns, and the whispers of gutter rats and holy men alike tell of a cult long thought dead hiding in plain sight. And then there are the findings of the King's own bastard son in the northern reaches of the kingdom. When disfigured corpses begin appearing at random during the night in Baedorn, the citizens of the city-state cry demon and call for aid from Antenox, the order of legendary wandering knights who have for centuries slain without mercy both demons and those who would summon them. The order dispatches Drystan Nighttyr, a man who abandoned his future with the Holy Inquisition to join the order, so as to placate the fears of Baedorn's people by tracking down those responsible for the bodies. With him travels the magic-wielding Akkali, an unapologetically brutal Enkiri whose years spent enslaved to a demon-summoning mage makes her uniquely qualified to aid Antenox in their efforts. Drystan's task brings him back into contact with his old life in the Inquisition and his childhood friend Tiernan Brennan, now an Inquisitor Captain charged with much the same mission as he by his superiors within the Church. After a rather bitter reunion in which Tiernan thrashes him soundly for abandoning his brothers and then is nearly killed by Akkali in retaliation, the three find common ground in their search for the source of the patchwork corpses appearing in the night all over the city-state. They find it in the Shalewarrens, abandoned tunnels crisscrossing the Oribian, in the form of a madman driven by an equally mad ghost to assemble an army of homunculi to face a mysterious threat of which only they seem to know. A corpse-stealing espiri mage, however, becomes the least of their worries when they learn of something with a purpose far more sinister beginning to gather power in the trackless forests to the west...

The world’s old Gods lie dormant, imprisoned for centuries in a timeless rift. For many years they have accepted the fate of their actions, yet the people who still roam freely have not. A small sect of fanatical magicians, led by Bellack, a sinister and heartless spell weaver have not forgotten the powers that the old Gods once possessed and seek to secure their God Queen’s release to gain both her love and immortality. With the discovery of a large crystal deep in the Tanarian mines, the sect believes it has found a catalyst for their powers to break free their Queen. They will stop at nothing to acquire the crystal and, after their offers are refused, drag nations to war for their dark aim. Using their magic to tip the scales of war in their favour they force an order of Generals, the Su-Katii warrior elite to their will, as they alone will hold the key to victory in this war. Only Barrad a new initiate to the Su-Katii luckily escapes the brotherhoods control. The stage is set, but Tamar a renegade wizard, has subtly been working for years against their cruel plan. He recruits Barrad and an escaped slave Tress to aid his cause, she is a highly resourceful and accomplished thief with the ability to destroy the brotherhood’s dreams. Bellack’s magic unwittingly reveals a new possibility to achieve his goal – Athene, a sweet young girl oblivious to her past and the power that surrounds her. Realising her potential, Bellack unleashes an unstoppable warrior from a forgotten time to hunt down and apprehend Athene. Following their hearts, an unusual alliance is formed to struggle against the forces tearing their world apart. An enemy can be a friend, and a friend, an enemy.
