Strange things are happening in Aryk, almost as if history is repeating itself. New playing card graffiti sparks fear and rumors. There are whispers of a second rebellion-and of betrayers, assassins, and spies. And when a mysterious circus pitches their tents outside of town, Viktor is sure that he can't trust its Ringmaster ... or its Magician.

But all this pales in comparison to the new curriculum imposed on Aryk's schoolhouse. A new Apprenticeship program is being created. Master Molotov is searching for students to aid in his experiments. The pool of applicants is widening, and if Viktor and his serf or Gypsy friends are chosen, they may end up facing terrors in the last place they want to revisit-Staryi Castle itself.
