With a sleepy sigh, Ophelia untangles their fingers and leans back against the headboard. Then, in the frailest voice Zoe has ever heard, she speaks:

"I feel myself dying."

Tears rush into Zoe's eyes. "What?"

"Every day, I feel like I'm falling further and further..." Ophelia grows quiet as she raises a thin arm to grasp at the air.

The tears fall.
