Book 1.
Sasori was known to be the child of two dead heroes, a murderer and a rogue ninja who left his hometown but no one knows what caused him to become what he is today - Cold and Uncaring, except for a particular girl. 
Kivi, the heir to the famous Kagura Clan, took an interest in Sasori ever since they were young. Kivi pushed her ways and family duties to get close to Sasori, trying to break the walls that Sasori had built around him.  Instead of seeing her as a friend (Or something more), Sasori saw her as a valuable collection. 

Not until Kivi realized she was being hunted and Sasori was desperate to save her. For him to do that, he has to break the walls around him and become human again.
