Once when I was just five years old I asked my mom "why does the moon die in the morning?" She calmly replies "the sun dies too, at night, just so that the moon can live," "Why? I don't want them to die!" She gently stroked my hair. "Because that's how love works, darling."

"Why do you think Katty chose 'Moon' as her surname? Why not just stick with Le'Roy?" I glanced at her in question, surprised by the random question. Lilith continued speaking when it was clear I had no answer. "I think it has a meaning, even if she hadn't been thinking of it at the time." "It means she wanted something a little less conceited than 'the king'?" "Well, her parents are technically royalty." Lilith grinned and shook her head. "No. I think she chose 'Moon' because of what the moon does. The moon can't produce its own light. It can only reflect back what it's shown. Above all else, Katty fears forgetting how to love. So she surrounds herself with those who have nothing left to lose, because they love the deepest, and she reflects it all back at them." I swallowed and she tightened her fingers in mine before disentangling and getting to her feet. "Try, Max. I promise you, they've got no ulterior motives. Not when it comes to loving you and wanting the best for you." Then she was slipping from the room. I dropped my face into my hands and shuddered. I couldn't cry. I was all dry already. But if I wasn't I would have had tears flowing down my face. I felt so stupid. All she wanted from me was love. All either of them wanted, was love. That's why my blood and my body meant nothing to them. Because all they needed from me was a demonstration on how to be human and a reason to stay that way. This story is meant to be read alongside Moon's Reign, which comes after Moon Rise. It is written to make sense on it's own, but it will begin rather abruptly and there will be little character introduction.
