Cypur is held back from advancing in school because of a magick defect. It shouldn't matter, but the school board threatens him with exile. He blames his biological parents whom he has never known and wants to find them. One day, he meets a raven Halfhuman named Wescherlie who is a rarity that can fly without transforming into a bird like the rest of her kind.
