High school junior Theodore Lyons escapes his life of abuse and travels on, foot cross-country, from Nevada to Virginia to turn his fortitude into his new life.
Since birth Theodore has lived in the same house with the same two people, his parents, who, after racking up debt from their gambling addiction, decide their son should be the one to pay it off on the black market. For years it's only been his hair and bags of blood, but after the clients stopped wanting those things they started carving small pieces of skin for grafting, leaving patchwork scars all over Theodore's body. Theodore's only form of escape was nature. The grass, trees, flowers, he loved it all and it kept him from going mad in that house. And after starting a new school for the second time, Theodore and his best and only friend, Olivia, decide he's better off far, far away from this place. Given a compass by his friend as a form of navigation and good luck charm, Theodore starts his journey cross country, from Nevada to Virginia, to start a new life to make his escape a reality.

While his family adapted quickly-his mother becoming a caregiver and his father earning respect as a hunter-Nathan struggled to adjust. Life in the village felt foreign, and he struggled with survival skills. Assigned a harsh mentor, Nathan faced frustration and mistreatment but showed persistence. After standing up to bullies, he earned some respect, and his mentor began to soften, though Nathan still felt like an outsider, unsure if he would ever belong, Nathan never thought what his life will be like in the next 10 years.
