Rachel just had to put in a little more effort when she flipped you onto your back. She wasn't popular, but she wasn't an outsider - just like any other bully. Meet Calvin Eaton. Lanky and dark. His threatening appearance just happened to be the way he looked. He's just another outsider, like Rachel is just another bully. He spends his time reading, drawing, listening to Billy Idol and Metallica, getting picked on, and trying to remain undetected as much as possible. At least, that's their view of one another. Then one day Calvin and Rachel are assigned partners for a chemistry lab, giving them that once in a life time meeting of best friends for life. While a few boys from the cross country team have been pulling some dangerous pranks on Rachel, one prank includes Calvin. That's where the two decide to draw the line and get revenge. Rachel and Calvin decide to get back at the boys more than once. Not only do they get revenge, but they learn there's more to the small escape artist and silent goth than they expected. * There is swearing. However, there is less as the story continues as it is one of the symbols I use to show how the characters are changing into better people. If you don't like swearing, you have been warned. Loosely based on the folklore of seductive water sprites, particularly the Vila (a Central European version of Rusalka). Written for @AfterDark's "Mirror, Mirror" contest (Mar 2020) -'Mysterious Ways'. A young woman wakes in the wrong version of her bedroom. Or is it so wrong after all? ('You wake in a strange place, possibly as someone else.') -'The Listeners'. Morial and her fellow Spirit Listeners work hard to maintain the balance between nature and mortals; until, one Summer, Morial is accused of upsetting that balance herself. ("I know what you did last summer". The prompt features as paragraph nine in my story.) -'Between the (Spread)Sheets'. An accountant and a trader play cat-and-mouse in a City firm. (@Crime's 'Deceptive Detective' Aug 2020: one criminal goes undercover to expose or be exposed by another.) -'The Unexpected Message'. A missed phone call proves momentous for a young art historian. The only real thing in this story is the Museum of London (which has an excellent Roman gallery, btw); any coincidence with real heritage experts - or indeed the unrealistic probability of such a find - is my fault. -'Cyclopean Arches'. A hundred million eyes adjusted to the dark all at once, all surprised to be awakened so soon. We ran through our checklists of limbs and senses, drawing ourselves out of our dreams piece by piece. Some went back to sleep, unaware, unbothered, too tired to notice the difference. Some lay in bed, too anxious to stand until the light of dawn crept through their windows at last, and they were sure the monsters in their closets had gone back to sleep. Some leapt from their slumbers, more keenly aware than others that the missing pieces were important. But we didn't know. We couldn't have. Not until we found ourselves standing in the light and discovered: We no longer had shadows.
